Surveys: Guide to Teaching AI How to Interpret Ranges (AI)
To process survey results accurately, particularly when dealing with groups or ranges like age or duration of residence, it's essential to clearly define how these ranges should be interpreted.
Here's how you can instruct an AI to handle such data.
The most optimal thing is not to write these instructions every time, but to add them to the long-term instructions of the copilot.
Instructions for Interpreting Ranges
Example 1: Age Group
Raw data:- 18-24
- 25-34
- 35-44
- 45-54
- 55-64
- 65-79
- 80+
If you ask, "What percentage were over the age of 50?" the AI might not provide a correct answer.
You need to provide instructions for the AI:
The "Age group" column contains two numbers separated by a dash. The first number represents the "Lower Age Bound." The second number represents the "Upper Age Bound." If the group is labeled as "80+," it means the "Lower Age Bound" is 80, and the "Upper Age Bound" is 120.
When User asks about age, it means that you should use both the "Lower Age Bound" and the "Upper Age Bound" columns.
Examples:
"18-24" translates to Lower Age Bound: 18, Upper Age Bound: 24.
"25-34" translates to Lower Age Bound: 25, Upper Age Bound: 34.
"80+" translates to Lower Age Bound: 80, Upper Age Bound: 120.
Example 2: Duration of Residence
Raw data:- 11-20 years
- 1-5 years
- 6-10 years
- All my life
- Less than 1 year
Instructions for the AI:
The "How long have you lived in this area?" column contains ranges in years separated by a dash and followed by the word "years" (e.g., 1-5 years). The first number represents the "Lower Live Time Bound." The second number represents the "Upper Live Time Bound."
If the duration is labeled as "Over 20 years," it means the "Lower Live Time Bound" is 20, and the "Upper Live Time Bound" is 120.
If the duration is labeled as "Less than 1 year," it means the "Lower Live Time Bound" is 0, and the "Upper Live Time Bound" is 1.
Examples:
- "1-5 years" translates to Lower Live Time Bound: 1, Upper Live Time Bound: 5.
- "6-10 years" translates to Lower Live Time Bound: 6, Upper Live Time Bound: 10.
- "Over 20 years" translates to Lower Live Time Bound: 20, Upper Live Time Bound: 120.
- "Less than 1 year" translates to Lower Live Time Bound: 0, Upper Live Time Bound: 1.
By providing these detailed instructions, the AI can now accurately interpret and process age groups and duration of residence ranges in survey data.
